Ordinarily Beautiful

Paper rustling
school bus breaks squeaking
dog chain rattling
interstate cars humming
wind whispering and shhhhhhing
train omming somewhere close

A memory, specific and singular
lives tucked within the folds of my brain
filtered light, a dim golden, illuminates my son's face
cocooned together inside our sheet tent
warm and perfectly held
safe.

Simple chatter fills the space
and sleep waits patiently
for our arrival.
